AI visibility: how to get ChatGPT and Google AI to recommend your business
More and more customers skip the list of search results and ask an AI assistant instead, getting a ready answer with a few business names. Here is where AI gets those names and what you can do so yours is among them, described truthfully.
What AI visibility means
AI visibility answers two questions: does an AI assistant mention your business when a customer asks about what you offer, and does it tell the truth about you? It covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and AI answers in Google Search (AI Overviews and, where available, AI Mode).
The industry calls this AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) or GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). The names are new; the goal is simple: be in the answer, not only in the search results.
How it differs from SEO
SEO competes for a position in a list of results. An AI assistant often doesn't show that list at all. It reads many sources, summarises them and recommends two or three businesses. If yours isn't in that answer, the customer may never reach your website.
Good SEO still helps, because assistants that search the web rely on indexed pages. It isn't enough on its own: AI also weighs what other sources say about you and whether your facts are consistent everywhere.
Where AI gets information about businesses
- Live web search. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google AI can search the web before answering, so your site must be open to their crawlers and indexed.
- Knowledge stored in the model. Models learn from past text, so they sometimes repeat outdated facts such as old opening hours.
- Profiles and directories. Your Google Business Profile, maps, industry directories and review sites are frequently cited.
- Independent mentions. Articles, rankings and conversations where someone recommends you strengthen the model's confidence.
What influences whether AI recommends you
- Consistent facts everywhere. Name, address, hours, services and prices should match across your website, Google profile and directories.
- A website that answers customer questions directly. Separate service pages, a Q&A section, specifics instead of slogans.
- Structured data. schema.org markup (Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQPage) helps machines understand who you are.
- A site open to AI crawlers. If robots.txt blocks assistant crawlers, you won't appear in their search results.
- Mentions in independent sources. Customer reviews, trade articles, local media and directories.
- Freshness. Content someone reviews and corrects regularly contains fewer errors.
How to measure it
One question asked once is a curiosity, not a measurement. AI answers change week to week and differ between assistants. A reliable picture needs a fixed set of real customer questions, asked regularly in several AI engines, with an archive of full answers, a comparison with competitors and a before-and-after measurement for every change.
What nobody can promise
Nobody controls what ChatGPT or Google say. Anyone guaranteeing that AI will recommend you is not telling the truth. What can honestly be promised is work: measurements, fixes and content, with the effect shown in numbers. Mentara does not measure Microsoft Copilot because it has no public API.
Where to start
- Write down 10–25 questions your customers actually ask.
- Ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google, and save the answers with a date.
- List factual errors and fix them at the source: your website, Google profile and directories.
- Add clear answers and structured data to your website.
- Repeat the measurement regularly and compare.
You can do this yourself or hand it to LEO, Mentara's AI employee, who does it every week while you just approve the changes.
